5 Life Lessons from “The Pursuit of Happiness” Movie

1. Don’t Give Up on Your Dreams

Heck, this is one of the best dialogues from the movie where Chris (played by Will Smith) is giving his little son the life lesson we all need!

“You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves they wanna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period.”

2. Bad Days are a Part of Life

Remember how bright the sun shines after a dark stormy rainy night? Good and bad days are an inevitable part of life. How satiating it would be to taste success after dealing with the hardships of life. Chris, who is a salesman of some medical device, does not have enough finance to pay for everyday needs.

His wife leaves him, he becomes homeless with his little son and then he got this unpaid internship at a brokerage firm for 6-months. It is his perseverance, faith and courage that keep him going through these bad phases of life. Chris proves that happiness lies within your attitude of not giving up during the worst times of life.

3. It’s Okay to Get Inspiration

People get jealous of others success without even realizing what all it took them to achieve it. However, if you remember the scene where Chris is wondering how people are happy and what needs to be done to be a part of that happy crowd. He asks a random person walking down the street, “You look so happy. I wanna know what do you do and how do you do it.” The way he takes inspiration from happy people is truly motivating.

4. Excuses Won’t Take You Anywhere

Remember the scene where Chris has to appear for the permanent stock broker position interview. Unfortunately, he got arrested a night before for not paying parking tickets while he was painting his apartment. This also didn’t stop him from showing up at the interview with no formals and paint marks on his body.

5. Have an Optimistic Outlook towards Life

Despite being surrounded by negativity and hardships of life, Chris is always seen having a positive and earnest attitude towards life. He is modest, humble and does not lose his cool even in the most unfavorable life circumstances.

He believes that happiness lies within us and is guided to give his best in whatever he does. His polite tone, firm handshakes and never die attitude is the charm of his personality. He simply gave us the lesson to adopt a calm approach to tough situations of life.
